This is Takazudo Modular Highlights vol.10 (distributed September 10, 2024).

This is an archive of the newsletter sent through our Mercari Shops. While we call it an archive, the Mercari newsletter has various limitations, so this is an optimized article for the web.

Here are the contents of Vol.10.

This is Takazudo Modular Highlights vol.10 (distributed September 10, 2024).

This issue covers the launch of OXI ONE Magenta and Silver editions, plus some sale product recommendations.

OXI ONE Magenta/Silver Editions Now Available

One of our best-selling products since we opened has been the versatile sequencer OXI ONE from OXI Instruments. Previously, OXI ONE was available in two versions: the standard edition and the limited Black edition.

Now, two new editions have been added: the Magenta and Silver versions.

These were first publicly unveiled at Superbooth 2024, a major modular synth event held in May this year. Sales have finally begun, and we've added them to our lineup.

These weren't originally in the distributor inventory list, but when I directly asked OXI Instruments, they said it was possible, so I ordered one of each as a trial.

Thankfully, the Silver edition was purchased quickly and is currently out of stock. Since we've received inquiries from other customers, we plan to restock soon (pending manufacturer inventory confirmation). If you're interested, please register for restock notifications on the product details page.

Also, as mentioned in our previous newsletter, we're currently running a sale until September 18 at 00:00, and the standard OXI ONE is eligible while stock lasts. We also have one Black edition in stock, so please check those out as well.

Weston Precision Audio: B2 Kick

In today's newsletter, let me also introduce B2 Kick from Weston Precision Audio.

By the way, I'm writing this on September 10, and September 9 was "909 Day" — a day celebrating the Roland TR-909, which was a trending topic on X. I, Takazudo, am very fond of TR-909 sounds and own modules that produce 909-like sounds.

So about this B2 Kick — it's a module that produces sounds close to the TR-909 kick. The 909 kick is known for its powerful, punchy sound, and B2 Kick is essentially a drum synth module that shows you how to create such a kick.

Specifically, a 909 kick-like sound features rapid pitch rise and fall within the sound. At lower pitches, this emphasizes the attack. Adding resonance to the filter further emphasizes the waviness of the sound, and so on. I'm not sure if the actual TR-909 kick circuit works exactly this way, but B2 Kick is essentially a toolbox for creating kick-like sounds.

Beyond that, it features 1V/Oct for use as a bass synth voice, the ability to blend two oscillators, and many other rich features. Weston Precision Audio modules tend to be on the pricier side, but they all offer this kind of analog-rich experience that's genuinely fun.

For me personally, I've always loved that 909 kick sound, and I used to spend hours searching through sampling libraries trying different ones. I mean, I always thought samples were good enough. For a long time. But when you use pre-made drum kits combined with other synths and play them together, you start wanting to tweak things just a bit more.

Modular synths feel to me like the embodiment of that desire to synthesize sounds. In practice, you could just record sounds you like and reuse them for your tracks. But even for a single kick, exploring with a module like this and gradually understanding your own preferences is an experience that I think can only be had with modular synthesizers.

In the videos I've recently uploaded to YouTube, every one that features a punchy 909-like kick uses this module. If you're interested, please check them out.

That's all for this newsletter. We'll send another during the sale period.

See you next time.
