This is Takazudo Modular Highlights vol.11 (distributed September 16, 2024).
This issue covers the addition of 3 blank panel sets and Blank Panel The Sun, plus sale product recommendations. The sale runs until September 18 at 00:00, so if anything catches your eye, please consider it.
3 New Blank Panel Sets Added
We've been selling a "Large Blank Panel Set" containing 4 large-size blank panels. It started when, during a conversation about how blank panels can be surprisingly expensive, I thought I'd try making some myself. Thankfully, this panel set has been quite popular with customers.
So we decided to add small and medium-sized blank panel sets and a 1U blank panel set to the lineup. Our current blank panel sets are now:
- 3U Large: 10-16HP
- 3U Medium: 5-8HP
- 3U Small: 1-4HP
- 1U: 1-10HP
The 1U size is for modules with 1/3 the height of standard 3U modules, as used by brands like Intellijel. While we don't carry 1U modules, I noticed that 1U blank panels weren't really available anywhere, so I made them.
All are sold as sets, so if you have some empty space to fill, please consider them.
By the way, I 3D-printed prototypes first to verify dimensions. Very convenient.
Blank Panel The Sun Added
I also created a 12HP illustrated blank panel called The Sun, which is now available for purchase.
Previously, I made a blank panel with a UFO illustration as an experiment, and surprisingly many customers said they liked it. That inspired me to create a similar one. The Sun is sold as a 2-panel set. The UFO panel has also been updated to a 2-panel set at the same price. The UFO panel is currently out of stock but will be restocked within the week. For customers who previously purchased the UFO panel, I plan to include an extra panel as a gift with their next purchase.
Between these and the blank panel sets, nearly 10kg of blank panels arrived at my house, which was quite surprising.
I'd be happy if you like them and consider purchasing!
Weston Precision Audio: AD110 Analog Drums
Lastly, since we're in the middle of the sale, let me introduce AD110 Analog Drums from Weston Precision Audio. This module appears to be a clone of the Boss DR-110.
I, Takazudo, have been using the AD110 frequently lately. In the sessions I've uploaded to YouTube recently, I use this whenever I'm playing drum-like sounds.
As for my personal preferences, I'm into techno around BPM 140-145, and I've almost always used TR-808 and TR-909 sounds. In the modular world, I was collecting clone-like modules of these and using them. However, in my current rack, most of those have been replaced by the AD110.
You might ask: "Does the AD110 really sound like an 808 or 909?" I don't think it's exactly the same. But as I wrote in my column (see Column 003: Clipping Audio Through Mixers), by distorting and processing the sound, you can change it quite a bit, and I've been able to get sounds pretty close to what I was after.
Since the 808 and 909 are analog circuit-based, and this AD110 is likely based on similar analog circuits, there may be similarities in the processing used to create the sounds.
Writing things like "it's actually pretty close" might upset dedicated 808 and 909 fans, but regardless of whether the sound is similar or not, having six drum sounds packed into this size is quite useful in modular systems, which tend to become large setups.
In machine-live environments, drums are often handled by Elektron devices or drum machines, but I'd also recommend completing everything within the modular system and sequencing with OXI ONE, for example. I personally use two OXI ONEs, with one dedicated almost entirely to drums — it's very comfortable.
I use AD110 and B2 Kick in the following two videos.
