ADDAC System: ADDAC604 Dual Filter

This is an introduction to the ADDAC604 Dual Filter by ADDAC System, available at Takazudo Modular.

The ADDAC604 Dual Filter is a dual-channel multimode filter. The two channels can be used as two independent mono filters, or as a stereo filter.

Interface Overview

The interface of the ADDAC604 Dual Filter is straightforward.

Diagram: Interface overview

Each of the two channels has the following filter control knobs:

  • Cutoff knob (CUTOFF)
  • Resonance knob (RESONANCE)

The Cutoff can be controlled via CV, received through the CV INPUT located near the center of the panel. The incoming CV can be attenuated or inverted using the CUTOFF ATTENUVERTER directly above it.

The signal fed into the AUDIO INPUT jack is passed through the filter, which processes the audio through three types of filtering, each with its own dedicated output jack:

  • High-Pass filter (HIGHPASS)
  • Band-Pass filter (BANDPASS)
  • Low-Pass filter (LOWPASS)

Additionally, the switch at the very top of the panel is the operation mode selector. This switch toggles between the following two modes:

  • Left: Dual Mono mode (DUAL MONO)
  • Right: Stereo mode (STEREO)

In Dual Mono mode, the two channels operate independently. In Stereo mode, the left channel's Cutoff control simultaneously controls the Cutoff for both left and right channels.

In Stereo mode, by default, the right channel's Cutoff knob acts as an offset control for the Cutoff frequency set by the left channel. However, by removing a jumper on the back of the module, this offset function is disabled, and the right Cutoff knob will have no effect in Stereo mode.

Furthermore, the left channel's INPUT and CV INPUT are normalled to the right channel's respective inputs. When nothing is connected to the right channel's jacks, the left channel's input is also routed to the right channel.

Use Cases for the ADDAC604 Dual Filter

The ADDAC604 Dual Filter can be best described as a basic filter module for modular systems. While it doesn't feature any special functions, its sound has the analog character typical of ADDAC System modules.

Common Filter Applications

As a general note, here are some common ways filters are typically used:

  • Sending an Envelope to the Cutoff CV in sync with triggers, using it as a VCA substitute (LPF)
  • Sending nearly the same Envelope to both Cutoff and VCA CV in sync with triggers, using it like a Low Pass Gate (LPF)
  • Feeding a slow LFO into the Cutoff for long-term modulation
  • Gradually opening or closing the Cutoff to create breaks in tracks or performances
  • Controlling the Cutoff with high Resonance for sweep effects
  • Using it as a simple equalizer

Creating Stereo Effects

Since the ADDAC604 Dual Filter has the left channel input normalled to the right channel, even if you feed a mono VCO output into only the left channel, you still get two filter outputs. By varying how the left and right Cutoff values change, or by adjusting the left and right Resonance differently, you can create stereo-like effects.

Chaining Two Filters

You can also connect the output of one channel to the INPUT of the other channel, effectively chaining the two filters. For example, by applying an LPF followed by an HPF, you can independently control the Resonance of both the high and low frequency ranges, opening up various creative possibilities.

Using with Saturation/Distortion

A personal recommendation is to use it in combination with saturation or distortion, applying LPF filtering. The parts where Resonance is heavily applied get compressed more aggressively, producing a hard-hitting sound.

Within the ADDAC System lineup, the following modules can serve as saturation/distortion:

That concludes the introduction to the ADDAC604 Dual Filter.

This is a basic filter module, but one of the joys of modular synthesis is thinking about how to combine it with other modules and experimenting with various CV control approaches.

When considering such combinations, having a module that is simple without special features, yet equipped with the necessary CV control, turns out to be just right.

If you're looking for a filter, please consider this high-quality offering from ADDAC System.
