What Kind of Module Is the Pe2?
The Pe2 (Please Exist2) is a transformer module that converts unbalanced input to balanced output, or conversely, converts balanced input to unbalanced output. It has the following jacks:
- 2x 3.5mm analog I/O
- 2x 6.35mm (1/4 inch) balanced I/O
It also features a ground lift switch that eliminates hum noise caused by ground loops.
Conversion from Unbalanced to Balanced
The basic use case for the Pe2 is when you want to send your modular system's output to speakers or an audio interface.
The patch cables commonly used in modular systems are mono TS cables, which often cannot be directly connected to speakers or audio interfaces. Most speakers and audio interfaces use balanced connections for their inputs, and TS cables cannot be plugged directly into those jacks.
So if you've built a modular synth system and find yourself wondering why the speaker or audio interface jacks are so thick and how to connect them, this module is what you need.
The Pe2 handles the conversion from unbalanced to balanced connections as a passive (no power required) module.
Conversion from Balanced to Unbalanced
Since the Pe2 is a bidirectional transformer, the reverse conversion from balanced to unbalanced is also possible. It can likewise be used when you want to route input from a microphone or other audio equipment into your modular system.
Ground Lift Switch
Turning on the Pe2's Lift switch eliminates hum noise caused by ground loops.
If you're not sure what that means, I've prepared a demo below that demonstrates the effect of the ground lift switch. Listening with headphones will help you understand what it does.
There are various causes for this type of noise. For example, it can occur due to potential differences when connecting equipment powered from different electrical outlets.
In the demo, the module serving as the sound source and the audio interface are powered from separate outlets, which appears to be causing the background noise. You can confirm that the Pe2's function successfully eliminates this noise.
One caveat: since hum noise can have multiple causes, the Pe2's processing may not necessarily eliminate all hum noise in every case.
